Trust

One of the biggest blessings I have experienced in starting my own business is needing to trust God fully, and seeing him prove himself faithful.

Trust is a topic that I have wanted to write about for some time, as it is the underlying cause behind so many issues we encounter while seeking to do good work for God.

The tricky thing with trust is that, until it is tested, it’s theoretical. Before embarking on my entrepreneurial journey I trusted God, but with many things, and specifically with finances, I never had that trust tested, as my work always provided more than enough.

Over these past four years I have experienced so many challenges, and every time God has proven himself trustworthy – sometimes in dramatic ways – even when I didn’t display trust myself.

The easiest way for me to identify if I am trusting is when it’s missing. When I don’t trust I am much more anxious, and my emotions fluctuate frequently based on how business (or how I perceive business) is going. Additionally, when money is tight, I frantically think of ways to make more, rather than relying on God to provide as he always has.

Along this journey, I have found there are three things that really build my trust:

  1. My Life. Looking back is so important for this reason. I can recall going through a season of difficulty and thinking that I learned so much – only to have the same thing happen again months later.
  2. Other’s Lives. Hearing about God’s works in the lives of others is so encouraging, and another reason to be in community with those who are walking through similar challenges.
  3. The Word of God. Not only does the Bible have so many clear examples of of God’s trustworthy nature, but it also has so many encouraging verses.

If there is one thing I recommend doing right away, it is memorizing some verses on trust that really resonate with you, and meditating on them at times when you are struggling. I have included a number of my favourites below.

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.
Isaiah 26:3-4 ESV

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.
Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.
Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7 NLT

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV

Trust in the Lord and do good.
Then you will live safely in the land and prosper.
Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you your heart’s desires.
Commit everything you do to the Lord.
Trust him, and he will help you.
Psalm 37:3-5 NLT

You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.
Psalms 139:16 NLT

Some trust in chariots and some in horses
but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
Psalm 20:7 ESV
