Having advisors in our life who can speak wisdom and provide guidance is integral to our success.

Without wise leadership, a nation falls;
there is safety in having many advisers.
Proverbs 11:14 NLT

Fools think their own way is right,
but the wise listen to others.
Proverbs 12:15 NLT

Plans go wrong for lack of advice;
many advisers bring success.
Proverbs 15:22 NLT

We’ve not been designed to thrive alone; in our life or in our vocation. Having others who can speak wisdom and provide guidance is vital. They can help us see external situations and opportunities, as well as internal beliefs or actions that we need to address.

As I look back on my first business, I can see where I received much good counsel, and where I should have engaged others more.

Before starting the business, I had a number of amazing people in my life praying to help me discern if / when it was the right time to leave my job and start a company. When I finally made the leap, I had great peace, and so much support.

While running the business, I continued to have great support from close Christian friends, but I only had a few casual advisors from within the tech community. Often I would put my head down to work for weeks at a time, focusing on a challenge or goal, rather than sitting down with others to see if I was focusing on the right thing. I believe this led me to spend time working on those things that were not the most important.

My encouragement is to seek out advisors who can help in two ways. The first would be close Christians who can give spiritual guidance and practical wisdom. The second would be industry experts who can give insight from their experience. If this can be offered by the same people in your life, even better!

Don’t think you can do it alone. Have the humility to surround yourself with others who can help guide you to success according to God’s plan.
