Impact

We must purposefully plan the positive impact we want our work to have, if it will have any at all.

The beginning of a new year is a great time to review your vision, plan and strategize, and hone your execution. In the spirit of this season I encourage you to contemplate your impact as well. Obviously everything we do has an impact, but what I’m referring to here is purposeful good; seeking ways to bless those whom our work touches.

Positive impact is not something natural to business, it takes effort – and quite often, sacrifice – whether it is reduced profit margin or having to turn down unethical (but legal) clients or opportunities.

When we start a business, the desired impact is usually clear in our mind, but then the day to day pressures set in and we are inundated with the growth at all costs mindset.

In order to fight this attitude we need to purposefully and regularly review the impact we are making in our work, and think creatively about how can do more for God’s kingdom – helping those in need, improving our planet, giving voice to the disenfranchised, connecting people, and so much more. God has given us skills and passions to use for building his kingdom.

There are so many real challenges out in the world; may we think often about how our work can be a vessel to bring about our hearts desire from The Lord’s Prayer:

Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
