Integrity

Every day in business your honesty and integrity will be tested. How you respond shows the true condition of your heart.

Throughout the Bible God clearly calls us to a life of committed integrity and honesty, yet in the business world this way of living is challenged daily. Our character is seen in the sum of our responses to these challenges, and how we respond reveals our character to those around us, and to ourselves.

This is something that seems easy, but it sneaks in everywhere. Beyond the obvious, like offering an illegal product or service, there are so many subtle temptations. Like padding an expense report or time sheet, or taking advantage of grey areas in regulations, or taking a deal that doesn’t align with your values, or even obeying an order from your boss that isn’t ethical.

I have found that when I am tempted to compromise my integrity at work, even in a minor way, it’s a really good time to check my heart and look deeper into the why. For example, If I am tempted to minimize taxes paid, what is the reason behind it? Most often for me, the temptation to compromise is a manifestation of my doubt of God and his ability to provide what I think I need.

If we refuse to bend our standards, there will be difficulties; we may make less, lose deals and grow slower. However, there is great freedom in operating with the integrity God calls us to. When we live in this way it shows our trust in him, and we can be sure that he is with us, no matter what the road looks like.

The LORD detests the use of dishonest scales, but he delights in accurate weights.
