The big (big) picture

We must remember to take a step back from the day to day tasks AND from our work in general to realign what we do with our heavenly calling.

Any good business advice would be remiss if it didn’t include a reference to the big picture. We are often reminded to take a break from the day to day challenges and issues and take a 30,000 foot view of our business.

This is really good advice, especially as an entrepreneur or member of a small team, where you are responsible for both strategy and implementation. Remembering to look up and ensure you are still heading in the right direction is critical for the success of every organization.

However as Christians we need to take this one step further. Just as we need to regularly look at our business as a whole, we also need to look at our life as a whole, and remember that our calling to work is to serve a bigger purpose than just building a successful organization.

This time of planning and reflection can be hard to justify when our schedules are full, but it is vital for us to remember why we work, and to ensure that what we are doing – and how we are doing it – is glorifying God.

This encouragement is for me, just as much as for others, as I find it so easy to get caught up in short term goals (whatever they may be) and forget that the purpose of my work is ultimately to serve God, and that work is only part of what I am called to here.

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.
