The Foundation

If I had to give a fellow believer one piece of advice for work, it would be this – read your bible and pray before starting work every morning.

As a Christian, it took me a relatively long time to get to the point where I began to read my Bible and pray every morning. I wish I had begun sooner.

When I don’t start the day grounded in the truth, my thinking about work becomes distorted; I get prideful when things are going well, dejected when they aren’t, and make too much of the end goal of ‘success’ – rather than thinking about why God has me there in the first place.

By starting the day in the Word, I build my work day on the foundation of who God is and his plans for me, enabling me to work well, no matter the circumstances. This is a daily task because, sadly, I seem to forget it daily.

One thing that helps me in the morning is having a reading plan or a book to guide me – not to replace reading the bible itself – but to give commentary and additional insight. Here are a few that I have found extremely profitable:

I understand that mornings can be hard, and they often don’t go as planned, however even if it is just 10 minutes, I highly encourage you to set the right foundation for your work day.

Blessed is the man … [whose] delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.Psalm 1:1-2 ESV
