Running a business has many challenges and concerns, but God calls us to focus on the things we can change, and leave the rest to him.

“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”
Matthew‬ ‭6:34‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Business brings with it many concerns; from manageable issues like taxes and hiring to nebulous challenges like fundraising, strategy, and more. There is no end of things we can spend our time worrying about, and often do.

In light of all this, Gods call to focus only on today’s worries seems almost naive. Yet, when we focus on today and seek to do the work we are called to, the challenges are not insurmountable and we are given enough direction to continue forward.

Now this doesn’t mean we can’t plan for the future, but by focusing on today we show that we truly trust God and his good plan.

It’s easy to say, but I personally find this is a daily battle. My mind too often drifts to future concerns that play out in various scenarios, most of which never happen … and when they do I’m able to manage at that time.

I don’t have a failsafe solution, however I’ve found the following practical practices help me immensely.

  • Grounding myself in the truth by reading the Bible before work
  • Making a daily task list that will move me closer to my mission and vision
  • Taking time to pray at lunch, re-centering my day
  • Purposefully redirecting my mind when it wanders to future worries I cannot control

As you think about your work and the challenges ahead, I encourage you to focus on today, and then leave the rest in Gods capable hands.
